Good Shabbos Email

Written by Rabbi Yossi Lew

The email is written by Rabbi Yossi Lew, director of Chabad of Peachtree City, Georgia. The emails are edited by Mrs. Arlene Shapiro and Mr. Jeff Kalwerisky of the Chabad community in Atlanta, and Mr. Michael Weinstock of Chabad of Peachtree City.

Usually, the emails begin with a personal story or observation by Rabbi Lew, and the main theme connects with either the week's Torah portion or a relevant holiday theme. The majority of material is taken from the vast and expansive Torah expounding by the great Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi M. Schneersohn, of righteous and blessed memory.

BUGGING REMINDERS

Earlier this week, I was in the North Georgia Mountains on a routine Kosher-supervision commitment.

As it turned out, I was not the only guest to arrive in that region. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources had just released hundreds of thousands of Asian ladybugs onto the mountain. And they are simply everywhere. They fly, they crawl up and down sides of building facing the sun, and they easily enter homes.

The Department of Natural Resources hope the ladybugs will make their ways to the trees. Threatening and plaguing the Hemlock trees – a type of evergreen – are small insects called “Hemlock woolly adelgid.” This exotic pest, which ma… Read More »

GETTING OUT OF THE BOX

The news being reported from several countries around the world has become very disturbing. Each day, it seems, something horrible is happening. Whether it is a daily report of murderous slaughter of innocent people, or the panic of a plague-like disease ravaging tens of thousands, or other acts of violence committed by demented and deranged minds, influenced by twisted ideologies. There is certainly no shortage of bad news.

Other rifts and trouble stubbornly persist in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

The news in Israel continues to be alarming. A mere few weeks ago people around the world, yet again, ganged up against Israel, and by association, against the J… Read More »

SIMCHAS TORAH B'RAISHIS-POUNDING THE GROUND IN JOY

FOR SIMCHAS TORAH-B'RAISHIS

POUNDING THE GROUND IN JOY

Have you ever attended a “Hachnosas Sefer Torah”?

This ceremony is a really big deal. It occurs upon the completion of writing an entire Torah scroll. A Torah scroll contains precisely 304,805 letters. Each one of these must be handwritten on parchment, with a quill, in special hand-made ink. These letters must be separated from one another. Any mistake in any letter, or any single letter missing, renders the entire scroll invalid.

It takes about a year for a specially-trained scribe to write a Torah scroll.

The efforts in writing the Torah scroll notwithstanding, the ceremony its completion engenders hardly seems proportionate. Once the … Read More »

PROTECTION IN THE CITY

The name “Lubavitch” may be familiar to you, dear friends, and for good reason. This little village, out in White Russia, or today’s Belarus, was the home of the Chabad Chassidic movement for 102 years. As tiny and primitive as this place may have been, it was the seat of royalty in the fullest sense of the word. Some of those who lived there or visited there, were still with us just a few decades ago. They described this little town, either in writing or by way of mouth, as a most glorious and powerful beacon of light.

In 1915, during the First World War, the Chabad-Lubavitch Rebbe of the time decided to relocate due to the advancing German forces. The Chabad mo… Read More »

YOM KIPPUR-SWEET AND SOUR

SWEET AND SOUR

Fresh figs are not quite as popular in the stores of United States as they are in other countries. Perhaps it may be because of their extremely short shelf life. These delicate fruits can only last a few days without refrigeration. Dried ones, of course, are available all year round.

Fresh figs, though, are incredible. They are tender, plump and sweet. The fig possesses sweet, chewy flesh and crunchy edible seeds. The ones most frequently sold in this part of the world possess a deep purple and yellow color on their outside and they give off a slightly sweet scent. Since figs possess a delicate skin and flesh, they are usually eaten whole – skin and all; one simply pops the fig … Read More »
