One of my brothers-in-law called me this week to share and discuss an interesting dilemma. He had placed a somewhat costly Chanukah order with a friend in honor of the upcoming festival. The material was shipped through a well-known company in the United States.

A few days later, the package was nowhere to be found. My brother-in-law checked the tracking number on the website. It was recorded there that the package had, indeed, been delivered to his house a couple of days before. He had willingly chosen the option for the package to be delivered without a signature, so it was, therefore, not delivered into someone’s hand.

Are your children important to you? How about your grandchildren?

Anyone who is a parent would consider the above questions as ludicrous, or even preposterous. Children are, most obviously, important to their parents from before they even enter this world and for as long as life continues. Grandchildren? “Important” can hardly do justice to the way grandparents feel about them.

A WHIPPING OF OPPOSITES

Earlier this week, while waiting to visit a patient at a local hospital, I had the opportunity to sit with the permanent chaplain. This Southern gentleman, whose twang is distinct and notable, does not represent the Jewish religion. Over the years, though, we have become good friends. He consults with me regarding matters pertaining to Judaism.

He shared with me a most regrettable moment of his life. Going back wistfully some 6-7 decades ago, a little past his sixteenth birthday, he remembered his first days after earning his driver’s license. His father had set a curfew for him to be back home. It was 11:00 p.m.

SEEKING A GREAT DEAL

Recently I met with a long-time friend. This person had lately undergone a more scrupulous commitment to the Jewish duties and requirements. The intention was for life to be more spiritual through better connection to the Almighty, the Divine Author of the Torah and all those duties.

Since that time, the friend confided, things have taken a non-positive turn. The person has struggled in various areas in life. We entered a discussion regarding “benefits” and “expectations” people have when making commitments to be more conscientious and committed to Heaven.
