We were sitting around the Shabbos table last week, joined by a guest from the Holy Land. He is the head of a major chain store in Israel, and he frequently travels to the United States. As the discussion progressed, he expressed his distaste for Delta Airlines.

Seated around the table were a couple of Delta employees. They perked up their heads at this assault. This fellow explained that he once had a bad experience with Delta. The flight attendants were rude, and the company’s response to his complaint was, in his mind, grossly insufficient. United is his now preferred airline.

THE WISE, THE WICKED, AND THE HORSE

Earlier this week, I was invited to visit a horse farm. The owner proudly showed me around to the horses of different sizes and shapes, including his new two-week-old foal.

And then, with a look and sound of satisfaction and contentment, the owner showed me the “prize”: an Arabian horse. It was majestically tall and fit. It had a look of a champion. This was clearly an animal fit for royalty.

It seems that most of the free and advanced world breathed a sigh of relief late last week when the news came through that Hugo Chavez, autocratic president of Venezuela, had died. I have friends and colleagues who currently reside in that country. They, together with their communities, did not shed any tears when they learned they were rid of this man.

Chavez possessed a big mouth. He pursued his popularity and fame through bluster. He openly, and needlessly, took on the mighty United States, behaving immaturely towards the President – while, at the same time, most of his oil and export business was, in fact, with the United States. WHEN NOT LOSING IS WINNING

A video clip has been making the rounds, leaving behind a very warm feeling. In the clip, one sees a high school basketball head coach talking to his assembled team in the locker room. At some point, the “team manager” (which is a term unfamiliar to the game of basketball) is featured. This “manager” is mentally disabled. The head coach had appointed this fellow to a position where he runs errands and cheers on the team.

Each place of residence has its benefits and quirks. Some locations come with unique benefits. Our recent move to Peachtree City provides our family with quite an inimitable benefit: a number of pilots for Delta airlines live in the vicinity.

Pilots are leaders. They assume daily responsibility for hundreds of passengers, as they fly planes from one end of the world to the next. They are trained for emergencies, and many have performed heroic acts. They normally exude an image of authority and intelligence, and have fascinating tales of flights and of faraway places in which they had landed.
