Good Shabbos Email

Written by Rabbi Yossi Lew

The email is written by Rabbi Yossi Lew, director of Chabad of Peachtree City, Georgia. The emails are edited by Mrs. Arlene Shapiro and Mr. Jeff Kalwerisky of the Chabad community in Atlanta, and Mr. Michael Weinstock of Chabad of Peachtree City.

Usually, the emails begin with a personal story or observation by Rabbi Lew, and the main theme connects with either the week's Torah portion or a relevant holiday theme. The majority of material is taken from the vast and expansive Torah expounding by the great Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi M. Schneersohn, of righteous and blessed memory.

TZAV-FIRE ANSWERS FIRE

FIRE ANSWERS FIRE

Bidding farewell to a friend is normally tinged with sadness. A farewell at a funeral carries the finality element. That makes it terribly sad. When the funeral is for a tragic case, say, a young person succumbing to an illness or an accident, or someone slain at the hands of others, the farewell is downright miserable.

It has been a terrible week of suffering. Among the cases, a plane carrying 149 human beings from all over the world, was deliberately flown into a mountain by a premeditating, callous, and deranged pilot. No survivors. A building collapsed in a fiery explosion in New York, leveling more buildings and injuring scores.

There are times, however, when the traged… Read More »

VAYIKRA-BLACK AND BLUE IS GOLD

BLACK AND BLUE IS GOLD

It was the latest sensation to hit the Internet and social media. Originating in the United Kingdom, it seemed to occupy many around the world, certainly this entire country. It has, by now, thankfully gone away.

Yet, there is an important lesson and message from all this. Please forgive me, then, as we revisit this issue for just one more time.

The sensationalism in this case was over the color of a dress, which was blue and black. Due to the angle of light, or for some other reasons, many people saw the colors as white and gold.

Loud discussions and disagreements erupted all over the place. Those seeing blue and black could not fathom how it can be seen in any… Read More »

VAYAKHEL-PEKUDEI-A TIME FOR PANTS

 A TIME FOR PANTS

It has been happening for at least fifty consecutive years in this country: The clock changes. In the Spring, it “Springs Forward”; in the Fall, it “Falls Back.”

It happened again in the United States earlier this week again. Welcome to Spring.

The time change is not merely about moving the clock ahead or back. Each time the clock changes, the stories inevitably involve people who are sick and tired of this regulation. As I was preparing to write these very words, a dear friend shared how devastating this change is, and that it takes a few weeks to readjust. The loss of one hour, explained this friend, messes with the natural body s… Read More »

KI SISA-IN THE HEAT OF THE MATTER

IN THE HEAT OF THE MATTER

The measles epidemic prominently made an ugly reappearance recently in the United States. This virus was menacing millions of people some forty or fifty years ago, until it was largely eradicated from this country thanks, perhaps, to widespread vaccination.

This dangerous virus is still rampant in non-developed countries. Although the numbers are drastically down, it still affects around 20 million people a year, killing close to one hundred thousand of them per year. It recently unleashed its affliction upon thousands in this part of the world.

This is a nasty virus. It causes the carrier to feel terribly sick; the body breaks out with rashes; it causes pain; it is h… Read More »
