Good Shabbos Email

Written by Rabbi Yossi Lew

The email is written by Rabbi Yossi Lew, director of Chabad of Peachtree City, Georgia. The emails are edited by Mrs. Arlene Shapiro and Mr. Jeff Kalwerisky of the Chabad community in Atlanta, and Mr. Michael Weinstock of Chabad of Peachtree City.

Usually, the emails begin with a personal story or observation by Rabbi Lew, and the main theme connects with either the week's Torah portion or a relevant holiday theme. The majority of material is taken from the vast and expansive Torah expounding by the great Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi M. Schneersohn, of righteous and blessed memory.

HOLY HUGGING AND EATING

A member of the U.S. armed forces, who participated in liberating one of the concentration camps, recounted how their commanding officer briefed the men of his platoon before they entered the camp. “Nothing that you have ever seen or heard could prepare you for what you are about to see,” he said.

The soldiers were carrying food for the inhabitants of the cities they had captured. Their supplies included Hershey chocolate bars for the children. The officer forewarned against giving any of the food to the camp survivors. “These people have not eaten anything in years beyond scraps and morsels. As much as you may want to load them up with good food, and as … Read More »

FOR FINAL DAYS OF PESACH

FAITH PAYS

The festival of Passover is the holiday of faith: The Jewish people left Egypt, following the Almighty with complete faith, having little idea of what was in store for them in the inhospitable desert. In these days of celebrating Passover and the Exodus is reenacted, strengthening of faith must be, more than ever, a focus and highlight of the holiday.

Faith becomes that much more emphasized towards the final days of the holiday, celebrated this coming Monday and Tuesday. On Passover’s seventh day, the Jewish people crossed a miraculously dried-up Red (or Reed) Sea bed, during which faith also played a prominent role. On the eighth and last day of Passover, the attention is… Read More »

PESACH-FAITHFULLY READY

FAITHFULLY READY

Imagine the following scene: The impossibly long-awaited Moshiach (Messiah) finally appears. Yes, after close to two thousand years of mainly bitter exile and persecution, the Jewish people, and the world at large, are about to be freed from all physical and spiritual maladies. Tears of grief, troubles, fears, disease, wars, terrorism, poverty and death will be gone. Forever.

The excitement over a development of this magnitude would, without a doubt, be more than anyone alive has ever experienced. The Moshiach himself? Two thousand-years? Amazing! Just as the Prophets had preached and predicted.

The next step would be to leave the physical area of “Diaspora.” The an… Read More »

HEAVENLY CHANNELS

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to meet a man who will shortly be celebrating his eightieth birthday. His handshake remains firm, although his body is a little contorted. He had been, after all, standing on his feet all day in his store – which he had opened more than six decades ago.

It was his eyes, though. His eyes still sparkle and shine, especially when he smiles. He gets animated and excited when he is able to complement a discussion. He tells stories of years past, as he continues to live in the present.

He came out of the Soviet Union as a young man, he reminisced. His eyes had the look of someone going way back, to a different time, a different wo… Read More »
