Good Shabbos Email

Written by Rabbi Yossi Lew

The email is written by Rabbi Yossi Lew, director of Chabad of Peachtree City, Georgia. The emails are edited by Mrs. Arlene Shapiro and Mr. Jeff Kalwerisky of the Chabad community in Atlanta, and Mr. Michael Weinstock of Chabad of Peachtree City.

Usually, the emails begin with a personal story or observation by Rabbi Lew, and the main theme connects with either the week's Torah portion or a relevant holiday theme. The majority of material is taken from the vast and expansive Torah expounding by the great Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi M. Schneersohn, of righteous and blessed memory.

VAYISHLACH- MAJESTY IN MODESTY

FOR VAYISHLACH

MAJESTY IN MODESTY

(From a previous Good Shabbos Email)

It was another busy morning on the roads of Atlanta one day last week. Cars were moving to and fro in the morning’s frenzied rush hour, as my children and I were in our car on the way to school. At one of the red lights, I turned my head towards the car immediately next to ours.

The car’s driver was a woman. She was holding a little brush in between her thumb and index finger, applying something to her eyelashes. Her mouth was sort of dropped open, as she was looking into her driver’s-side mirror and carefully painting those hairs.

A few seconds later, the woman spotted us. She promptly released the brake and slowly… Read More »

The rockets continued to rain over the Holy Land of Israel during this past week, endangering millions of people. Salvos of a different kind continue to rain all over the electronic and print media regarding Israel’s right to put an end to this danger rather than exercising restraint. No one has yet to explain how countries around the world have a “right” to intervene with the safety of the citizens of another country.

The past few days have not been easy ones for anyone who has the fate of Israel in his or her heart. Israel, yet again, is reacting to an impossible situation, that has been festering for years. Israel was finally going after these terrorists… Read More »

LIFE’S BAD STRUGGLES

A moving story appeared in the “local” section of the Atlanta newspaper a couple of weeks ago. It was about a young teenager stricken with ovarian cancer who was given a few months to live. Having survived that peril, but with other health issues as a result of the disease, she married at the age of 30. Due to her illness, there was no chance for her to bear children, but she still prayed for them.

At some point, she began to feel pains in her abdominal area. Convinced she was relapsing, she begged her friends to pray for her as she visited the doctor. She was told that she was three months pregnant.

While the story is moving, it is flabbergasting how she… Read More »

This week’s closely followed United States bruising presidential election diverted the attention from the devastation and destruction caused by Hurricane and Super storm Sandy. This is unfortunate, because the pictures and images from every angle very much show how much ruin and wreckage has been left behind. One can see the homes that have been washed away, destroyed by fire, or flooded; neighborhoods beyond recognition; power, gas and running water just now coming back for tens of thousands. And all this compounded by long lines at gasoline pumps, only to find gasoline being rationed. And the list goes on and on.

And there is the human side: people in… Read More »

VAYEIRA- SAND AND SANDY

Hurricane Sandy that slammed into the East coast of the Unites States earlier this week has wreaked havoc for many millions of people. This devastating storm pummeled and walloped homes, businesses and other structures with its winds, while churning rivers of water through entire cities, plummeting them into disastrous and dangerous despair. My sister and her family, Chabad emissaries to Hoboken, New Jersey, sustained damage and were seriously affected by the storm. It has sown misery for countless millions with loss of electricity and water; for hundreds of thousands stuck in their… Read More »
